Our corporate office is located in Old Town Alexandria, VA, and our warehouse is located in Hyattsville, MD, inside the beltway and just across the DC line.  Jim Layton has lived in the DC Metro area for more than 20 years and currently lives in Falls Church, VA.

Our Team

Jim Layton, Owner

Jim is a Falls Church, VA, resident and the founder of SpaceMaker Mobile Storage.  Knowing that there is a better, more cost-effective way to store or move, Jim founded SpaceMaker along with his brothers, Tim and Mike, and Tim’s wife, Jena. Jim also works in commercial real estate as a principal and general counsel at Summit Commercial Real Estate.  In addition, he is a principal in Northern Virginia’s first medical cannabis company, Beyond/Hello.  Previously, he spent more than a decade as an attorney focused on anti-trust, white collar crime, criminal law, and corporate litigation.  He began his career as an assistant attorney general for the state of Washington followed bya stint as a criminal defense attorney.   One of the highlights of his legal career was cracking unsolved cases at America’s Most Wanted.  Jim earned his MBA from the University of Maryland, his JD from the University of Arizona, and his BA from the University of Washington.

Jose Hernandez, Manager

Jose Hernandez has more than 10 years of experience in the portable storage industry, having work for one of the most visible mobile storage companies in the country.  Jose was responsible for training and operations for multiple franchisees across the nation.  Jose has his CDL and is one of the most accomplished commercial delivery drivers in the DMV.   He spends a great deal of his time focused on safety, efficiency, and customer service.  Jose is also fluent in Spanish.

Mike Layton, Director of Business Development and Operations

Mike Layton is a serial entrepreneur, having been involved with a number of early stage start-ups in industries ranging from hydroelectric power to granite and now portable storage.  Mike also practiced as an attorney for many years with a focus on real estate and business litigation.  Mike is adept at using his legal training to solve business problems in a cost-effective manner.

Jena Layton, Accounting and Operations

Jena has her Master of Economics and Master of Public Administration from Syracuse University.  She also runs a successful online falconry business.  Her attention to detail and mind for finance and accounting make her indispensable to our operation.
